Earlier this month, we posted some insider tips for staying healthy while you travel. A helpful article in today's Wall Street Journal reminded us of a few more:

Use a disinfecting wipe to clean the tray table (and while you're at it, why not wipe down the armrests, too?).
Avoid the seat pocket - it can be full of nasties like used tissues and napkins.
Request a seat change if you are next to someone who is obviously not well (but don't expect much -- planes are very crowded at this time of year).
Use the air vent above your seat to bring fresh air toward your face.
Complain if the air circulation system is turned off for more than 30 minutes.

Holiday Vacation Photos

We've written before about how to take great vacation photos (see our list of related posts below), but photos related to the holidays present some special challenges. Keep all of our other tips in mind, of course, but also note the following:
For babies and toddlers, limit what's new. Don't put young children in brand-new and possibly uncomfortable fancy outfits and then go to the mall to be photographed with Santa for the first time without expecting a melt-down. Have the tots wear something they are used to, and spend some time hanging around with the elves before getting in line for the big pic. And don't underestimate the help that a favorite toy or lovey can provide in helping to soothe their mood.
When you are photographing family and friends in front of a brightly lit Christmas tree or Hanukkah menorah, you won't need your flash since most newer cameras are more light sensitive than older models, and will pick up on the light behind your subjects.
For photos out in the snow, use the sports setting to reduce the glare and to help the camera focus on your subjects.

Stay Healthy During Your Holiday Travels

If you've ever picked up a bug on a plane ride, you won't be surprised to hear that a study of more than 1000 airline passengers found that you are 23 times more likely to catch a cold in the air than on the ground. But the culprit isn't just the recirculated air or even the tight quarters. It is also the low humidity in the cabin, which dries out your nasal passages and makes you more vulnerable to viruses.

So if your next flight is more than two hours, consider bringing saline nasal drops, sprays, or gels (brands include Ayr, Ocean, Simply Saline), or moisturizing nasal swabs (SkyCap) on the flight with you. At the very least, they'll help you breathe more comfortably and prevent congestion while you are in the air.

Of course, some of the precautions you take on the ground are helpful on planes, too. For example, you'll want to wash your hands often, even if it only with a liquid hand sanitizer or wipe. And if you haven't yet had a flu shot, consider getting one a week or so before you fly.

Museum of Art & Design - NYC

I worked at Columbus Circle for years, and in all that time, never once heard a nice word spoken about the "Lollipop Building" at 2 Columbus Circle. So like many people, I was surprised by all the hoopla and controversy that accompanied the facade redesign commissioned by the Museum of Art & Design, which moved into the space in 2008.
Frankly, a recent visit to the Museum convinces me that they made the right call. For one thing, I love the light and amazing views the much maligned band of windows brings to the delightful restaurant called Robert. And the building now contributes life and vitality to the area, which the old staid, and well, boring facade did not.
The real reason to visit the Museum, though, is to enjoy the exhibits inside. Take the elevator to the highest level and then use the stairs to meander down -- the staircases include delightful treasures set in niches here and there.
We were particularly partial to the jewelry collection, but we were amused or touched by almost everything we saw. The level of creativity in the many one-of-a-kind pieces, be they furniture, architectural models or textiles is at an extraordinary level.
And don't miss a visit to the gift shop. Especially at this time of year, you'll surely find something you want -- either for yourself or for someone on your holiday gift list.

Quidditch Comes to New York City

The Quidditch World Cup is this weekend on Randall’s Island – all day Saturday and Sunday. Kid's all-day tickets are $4.99 for one day; adult tickets are around $9.99 – not including finals games on Sunday evening.

While games take place on ten fields, musical and circus entertainers will be performing continuously at the main stage area and scattered throughout the event site. Performances will include over a dozen Wizard Wrock bands, other local NYC bands, Coney Island sideshow performers, fire jugglers, sword swallowers, contortionists, live animals including owls... you name it, they've got it.

The Bridges of Central Park

Central Park is an integral part of New York City. For Manhattanites, it offers a welcome respite from the noise of the city streets; for visitors it offers the historic and beautiful design of Frederick Law Olmstead. Many of the classic views of the Park feature its 36 bridges and arches. Here is a look at some of the better known Central Park bridges:

Balcony Bridge, at West Drive and 77th Street, features benches on its east side. For the best view of this bridge, rent a rowboat at the Boathouse.
Bow Bridge, located mid-park near Bethesda Terrace, is made of cast iron and is one of the most recognizable bridges in the Park.
Bridge No. 24, located on the south side of the Resevoir, is also made of cast iron and is a popular warm-up spot for runners.
Dalehead Arch, at 64th and West Drive, is one of the many bridges popular with musicians for the amplification of sound.
Denesmouth Arch, near East 65th Street, is between the Children's Zoo and Central Park Zoo.
Dipway Arch, located mid-park at 60th St., has benches built into the walls.
Driprock Arch, which goes over a path connecting Wollman Rink to Hechscher Park, features a red brick facade.
Gapstow Bridge is surely one of the Park's most famous. This graceful stone structure is near East 62nd Street and offers lovely views of the city and the Park.
Glade Arch, one of the first designed by Calvert Vaux, was restored in the 1980s.
Glenspan Arch is a great place to be on a hot day. The rustic, lush setting and the nearby waterfall help you forget how overheated you are.
Greywacke Arch, near the Metropolitan Museum, is decorated in a Spanish-Moor style.
Huddlestone Arch is an engineering marvel, made of huge, uncut stones with only gravity and friction (no mortar of any type) holding them together.
Oak Bridge is no longer made of oak, but it retains the look of the original.
Ramble Stone Arch features rough hewn stones and a picturesque look.
Riftstone Arch is built, like Huddlestone Arch, without mortar of any type.
77th Street Stone Arch is the only double-arch bridge in the Park.
Trefoil Arch, near East 73rd Street, is named for the decorations on its east side.
Willowdell Arch, perhaps most noted for its proximity to the Balto statue, this arch is similar to Dipway Arch in look and with its built-in benches.

Don't forget to compare all the additional fees, like those for baggage, reserved seats, etc., when you compare flight prices online. These can vary from airline to airline and so can really affect your bottom line.

Planning a weekend get-away? Consider staying at a hotel located in the business district of your destination city. Hotel chains like W Hotels, Westin hotels, and Sheratons (all members of the Starwood hotel company) are not only bursting with amenities, like health clubs and room service, that entice business travelers but make a weekend stay pleasant, too, but they also frequently drop their prices by up to 50 percent on weekends.
For longer trips, we have long been proponents of hotel alternatives, such as renting a vacation condo or staying at a bed & breakfast. So we were delighted to see the rise of online services that link travelers with private homes, whose owners rent out their apartments or houses on a nightly basis. Staying in a private home is the ultimate way to have an insider's view of the place you are visiting. And it can often provide a much more affordable option to pricey hotels. Check out web sites like AirBnB, istopover, 9Flats, Roomorama and Wimdu to learn more.

Sign up for flash sale sites that offer travel deals, like Groupon Getaways, Jetsetter, Living Social Escapes and TravelZoo to receive time-sensitive but almost too-good-to-be-true prices on hotels, flights and more.

And while you're at it, sign up with sites like Bloomspot.com, Google Offers, Groupon, LivingSocial, Yelp, Yipit and Zozi for the location you are going to, so you can save on restaurants, sporting events, museums and attractions, and other activities throughout your trip.
But as helpful as the Internet can be in finding travel savings, for the best last-minute deals, you are often better off in dealing directly with discount airlines and with hotel properties by phone. Note: while an airline's toll-free hotline generally yields the best last minute airfare deals; for the best hotel deals, you should call the location where you want to stay directly and speak with the manager, who has the best incentive to fill unreserved rooms.
Whenever you are driving, follow the tips in The Insider's Guide to Saving Gas to make sure you aren't spending more for gas than you absolutely have to.
You can avoid the now-standard $25 fee that most airlines for checked luggage when you fly JetBlue or Southwest Airlines, neither of which has yet adopted the fee. Or you can shave a few dollars off (usually $2 or $3) by checking in online. But if you have lots of luggage and/or heavy or over-sized items (think skis, snowboards and golf clubs), you might do better to have the items shipped ahead. The Postal Service, UPS and FedEx provide this service, of course, but you can also try one of the companies that have risen up to take on this task. Check out our list.
If you are traveling with children, consider places that welcome your kids with wonderful freebies. For example, Holiday Inn lets kids stay and eat free, which can ending up saving you a lot.
Many hotels offer freebies for adults, too. Look for free parking, free newspapers, free Internet, free gym and pools, and best of all, free meals, like the cooked-to-order breakfasts offered by Embassy Suite Hotels.
Take at look at the nine suggestions in The Ultimate Guide to Free Travel -- while all of them might not be for you (house-sitting, for example, might be more work than its worth), you might find something that that will allow you to enjoy a wonderful vacation - for free!

FDNY Fire Zone

Fire Prevention Week is from October 9-15 this year, making now a good time to think about a visit to the FDNY Fire Zone. While intended for children with a real fire engine and gear that kids can play with, the Fire Zone reminds adults of the importance of fire safety, too. DO check out New England's splendid fall foliage by following our tips for the best places to see the leaves in the Boston area.

DON'T visit Bermuda after the "high" season ends in late October. Although temperatures remain relatively mild and prices will plumet, many hotels and restaurants use the off-season to make updates and repairs, so you'll find many places are closed.

DO visit NYC in the early autumn. The city positively sizzles with cultural offerings, cooler temperatures make exploring the Big Apple by foot pleasant, and the holiday crowds haven't yet arrived.

DON'T put off your vacation any longer, if you didn't go away during the summer. After all, remember that taking a vacation is good for you!

DO take advantage of all the freebies that are included with your hotel room: if there is a coffee maker with complimentary coffee in your hotel room, go ahead and use it. And if a continental breakfast is included in the cost of your room, by all means, enjoy that, too!

DON'T overlook places that welcome your kids with wonderful freebies. For example, Loews Hotels have children stay free, eat free, and see a movie for free; Holiday Inns lets kids stay and eat free.

DO fly at off-peak times. Late on Friday and early on Monday are some of the busiest times to travel, but how about planning your trip for Tuesday, which is traditionally one of the slowest?

DON'T forget to compare all the additional fees, like those for baggage, reserved seats, etc., when you compare flight prices online.

DO plan far, far in advance if you want to use frequent flyer miles earned from other travel or from credit card use. Between fewer flights and more block-out periods, these seats are harder and harder to come by.

DON'T rely completely on general travel sites for last minute savings. Often, you'll find that dealing directly with discount airlines via their website or toll-free hotline yields the best last minute airfare deals.

Renting a car when you travel can be full of hassles and unexpected expenses, so we have accumulated these Dos and Don'ts to help ease the process and save you money:

DO reserve early. Rental car fleets are constantly shifting, so you need to make your car rental reservations early to be sure you will have wheels ready where and when you need them. You also usually get a better deal if you reserve early. One easy way to do that is to make your reservations online.

DON'T pay for extra insurance. Many credit card companies include car rental insurance as one of the standard perks of using their credit card. You many also have rental car coverage from your regular auto insurance policy. But don't assume anything -- before you leave home, confirm you are already covered for for both the liability and collision coverage on rental cars, otherwise you'll have pay for the rental car company's policy.

DO check for damage. Before you take the car off the rental lot, look it over carefully and insist that the rental agent marks down any existing scratches and dents so that you can be sure you won't be held responsible for damage done before you picked up the car.

DON'T return the car with less fuel than it had at pick-up time because the rental company will charge you ridiculous rates per gallon for the missing fuel. But while you should refuel the car yourself...

DON'T top off the tank. As long as the fuel gauge needle is at the full mark, you've done your duty -- at today's gas prices, why pay more than you have to?

DO clean your trash out of the car. Why should you do someone else's job? Because it will take less than a minute and it will endear you to the rental staff. Who cares? These people have the ability to hold you accountable for damage done to the car and you don't want them to seek for scratches here and there to make up for the fact that you left junk food wrappers all over the floor.

DO find out if there is a grace period. Some companies will hit you with hefty late charges -- even an extra day -- if you don't return the car promptly, so make sure you know what their policies are and plan accordingly.

At The Insider Travel Guides, we are big fans of the carry-on, less so of checked baggage. But even we admit that sometimes there is no alternative to checking your luggage, especially if your trip takes you from home for a great deal of time, or if you have other circumstances (e.g. traveling with little children, or surfing or skiing) that requires lots of stuff. In these cases, the temptation is to put everything in the bags you are going to check, so that you can breeze through the airport free and easy without anything to lug around or submit to TSA scrutiny. We recommend, though, that you always keep some essentials with you in a carry-on. Here are some things to consider:

En Route
The possibilities for delays and cancelled flights are greater than ever, so make sure you have what you need to stay comfortable and entertained, such as:

reading materials (remembering that for some portion of the flight, you can't use some electronic items, so you'll need a non-electronic substitute)
a sweater, fleece or shawl to ward off the cold on the plane (blankets are not always provided by the airlines for free anymore, and when they are, they aren't necessarily freshly laundered)
warm socks to keep your toes toasty (assuming that you like to slip out of your shoes in flight, as we do)
healthy snacks (granola bars, dried fruit, etc.)
toiletry items that will ensure you feel your best -- we like to brush our teeth and wash our face with a towelette just before de-planing
a mini first aid kit with Kleenex, band-aids, antibiotic cream, Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, antihistamines, and a bottle of baby aspirin -- its clot-busting effect can save your (or someone else's) life in the event of a heart attack

At Your Destination
Let's face it: it is hardly unusual for airlines to temporarily lose luggage, even though they now charge you to transport it. So at the absolute minimum, you should carry all prescription medication with you, plus a full change of clothes. We also like to carry our toiletry bag with us -- we know, we know, packing shampoo and such in those little 3 oz bottles and putting it all in a plastic bag is a hassle -- but having to spend time on our vacation tracking down the items we need is an even bigger hassle. We hope it almost goes without saying that anything of real value, whether it is your laptop, fine jewelry, or important business documents, should always stay with you.

Things to Pack When Traveling With Young Children

Traveling with young children isn't easy. And deciding what to take with you on vacation isn't easy, either. The truth is that traveling with little kids takes patience, humor -- and lots of stuff. Here are the basics:

If your kids are in diapers, take plenty with you; many more, in fact, than you think you'll possibly need. This is especially true if you will be flying: if your flight is delayed for hours and hours, you don't want to be caught without a way to change a screaming baby. If you know for sure that you can buy diapers at your destination, that's fine, but be sure to have plenty for the journey itself, remembering that travel can wreak havoc on children's digestive systems.
If your child still drinks from a bottle, bring plenty of those with you, too, for similar reasons, along with breast milk (one of the few liquids allowed in any quantity through security screening) or formula mix you can make with bottled water.
Plenty of kid-friendly snacks are also a necessity. Consider your choices carefully - for example, we learned the hard way that while blueberries are a nice healthy snack, the fact that they leave permanent stains made them a poor choice for a long car trip with our toddler (chocolate pudding wasn't such a great option, either).
Have a bag full of tricks including plenty of small toys, games, books and coloring materials. We like to bring a couple of new things to increase our kids' interest, remembering that we don't always have to buy something -- checking out new titles from the library works, too. If you have a mp3 player, load it with music your young one enjoys, and if you have a portable DVD player, then by all means, bring it (along with headphones -- we think it goes without saying that anything that might distract your fellow passengers shouldn't make it on the plane and if you are in a car, you'll appreciate the quiet).
No matter how you are travelling, it is a good idea to bring a small blanket. Remember that the cabin air gets quite cold on long flights and even if you are lucky enough to snack an airline-supplied blanket, there is no guarantee it was recently laundered. And in hotels or even at grandma's a reminder of home at night is always welcome.
Always bring at least one change of clothes for you and for your child, even if your trip is short. Accidents happen, kids often suffer from motion-sickness -- and you'll feel better if everyone affected can put on something fresh.
Bring a handful of zip-lock bags. There is no end to the uses for these - dispose of dirty diapers, use them as air-sickness bags, store leftovers, etc., etc.
Carry a first aid kit with you everywhere. It should include items such as antibiotic ointment, band aids, and children's Tylenol.
Even if your kids are out of diapers, bring wipes. They are indispensable for cleaning up all kinds of messes everywhere, anytime. Bring a bottle of purell, too, for when soap and water aren't available, but don't forget the wipes!

Plan your luggage carefully. If you are flying, think carefully about what goes into carry-ons and what can be checked. If you are driving, pack the car so that the items you'll need first remain on top. To help lighten your own load, remember that if your child can walk, he can carry a small backpack or pull a small wheeled back. We always recommend taking a small, foldable stroller, even for pre-schoolers who don't often need it. After a long day at the theme park, or in a busy museum, you'll be glad not to be carrying your child as he/she nods off to sleep. At the airport, keep your stroller with you as long as you can. You can gate-check it just before you board the plane, but having it with you as long as possible makes it easier for your little one to travel through the airport and provides a safe, clean place to sit (or sleep!) while you wait for your plane.

What should you bring to Bermuda to make the most of your vacation? Here is a list of essentials:

Bathing suits. You'll definitely want to spend lots of time at the beach, so bring at least two suits, so you never have that uncomfortable feeling of putting on a wet bathing suit.
Beach cover-up. Bermuda is still a fairly formal place, so you'll need something to wear over your suit when you head in for lunch -- most places require more than a sarong.
Sunscreen. While Bermuda isn't as close to the equator as some other beach destinations, you can still get a serious summer burn. So bring plenty of high SPF sunscreen, and apply it liberally, often.
Sunglasses. Get that glam look while you protect your peepers.
Golf clubs. Bermuda is a golf lover's paradise, with more courses per square mile than any other place on earth. If you are planning to play multiple rounds, it definitely pays to bring your clubs rather than renting them each time you go out. But if you are just playing once, you'll want to do the math -- factoring in the cost of bringing over-sized luggage on the plane vs club rental.
Bermuda shorts. Yup, people really wear them here -- and you should, too!
Evening clothes. Some restaurants require that you dress for dinner, with jackets required for men, and appropriate attire for the ladies. So if you plan to take advantage of Bermuda's better restaurants, plan to bring something dressy.

Insider Tips for Packing for a San Francisco Vacation

Most of us have heard Mark Twain's quip that "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." But here's the thing: if you are planning a summer vacation in San Francisco, you need to be prepared for both warmer and cooler weather -- not only does the climate vary according to exactly where you are in the area (for example, the city proper tends to be cooler; the hills in Marin county tend to be warmer), but temperatures fluctuate throughout the day -- often as much as 20 degrees (yup, when the famous fog rolls in, you can really feel a chill). So the best thing to do is to pack layers of clothing, so you'll be ready to put on and take off a sweater, fleece or sweatshirt as needed.

It rarely gets really hot in the city (although it may in Sausalito or Sonoma), so if you are really only visiting city sights, you should plan to wear long pants and short sleeved shirts (with that extra layer always handy), rather than shorts and tank tops.

San Francisco is a walking town with plenty of hills and some still-cobbled streets, so we recommend that you bring comfortable shoes to wear. Note that there are lots of really great hiking trails in the area, so if that interests you, real hiking footwear would be appropriate, too.

The winter is generally much rainier than the summer, but we recommend bringing umbrellas in all seasons.

While casual clothes are almost always appropriate during the day, note that people often still dress for dinner, and you may want to do likewise.

While the San Francisco-area ocean is lovely, the water is downright freezing -- so you can leave that bathing suit at home, unless you plan to swim in your hotel pool.

Lucky enough to be planning a vacation to Hawaii this summer? Here are some must-haves that will ensure you arrive with everything you need:

Beach wear. Even if you are planning lots of other activities, you'll want to spend at least a little time on the beach, so make sure you have at least one bathing suit (2 if you want to rotate them, making sure you never have to step into a wet one), plus appropriate footwear and a cover-up.
Binoculars. Perfect for viewing the scenery. You will agree with this suggestion if you spot a whale and want to have a closer look.
Canvas bag to use as your beach tote -- it can double as your carry-on or fold flat into your luggage.
Cotton dress or tunic for women. It can serve as a beach cover-up but still look presentable when you hit town for some shopping.
Flashlight. You will need it in the tunnels if you hike up Diamond Head. You will also need it if you take a sunset volcano tour on the Big Island.
Hiking boots and backpack. Hawaii has some of the world's best hiking trails (we especially like the Awaawapuhi Trail and Waimea Canyon on Kauai).
Large cotton scarf (72 x 30 inches is a good size) that will serve multiple purposes for most women: 1) use it as a blanket on the plane 2) as a blanket and sarong at the beach and 3) around your neck to dress up a plain top.
Sunblock. Hawaii is closer to the equator than any part of the USA, Canada or Japan, so you can get a serious burn any time of the year. Don't say we didn't warn you.
Sun hat. We especially recommend one that folds flat -- a straw hat that must keep it's shape takes up too much space in your luggage.
Umbrella and rain gear. Sadly, it DOES rain in Hawaii. In fact, certain parts of several of the islands technically are rain forests, so you will need an umbrella.
Warm sweater, sweatshirt or a windbreaker. Many of the great sights (such as the volcanoes and Mount Haleakala) are at high altitudes where the thin air is much cooler. Also, it can get cool in the evening even at sea level. Incidentally, we like cardigans rather than structured jackets on vacation -- not only do they have a more casual vibe, but the knits are easier to pack.

New Yorkers are a fashionable bunch, so you'll definitely want to pack clothes that will make you look your best. That doesn't mean, however, that you have to have the latest styles -- just that you want to look sophisticated rather than sloppy. So think white jeans with a fun top, rather than elastic waist pants and an oversized T; bring cute flats to walk around in rather than bulky sneakers; and that fanny pack? Don't even consider it!
Whether you are visiting museums, shopping, or sightseeing, you'll find yourself doing a lot of walking. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes. Sure you can pack a pair of killer heels, too, but keep them for evening (or like many New Yorkers, keep them in your bag and change into them when you reach your destination).
Yup, New Yorkers wear lots of black -- and you can, too. But keep in mind that New York City is hot in the summer, so if you are going for a dark color, be sure to make it in a light fabric, like linen or cotton. We generally have a policy of less-is-more when it comes to taking make-up on vacation, especially with ever-changing TSA policies for liquid and sprays and with the ever-increasing costs of flying with luggage. But there are certain essentials that a girl can simply not do without!

That being said, the first thing we always do before packing for a trip is checking what we can leave behind. It is worth a call to the hotel or a visit to the hotel's website to confirm if there will be a hairdryer, and if the brands of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. that might be automatically placed in your room will work for you. Anytime you can lighten your load of these basics, it leaves more room in your bag for the fun stuff!

We also make sure we keep the smallest versions possible of all of our necessities, including our hairbrush and toothbrush. Check out the travel section of your drugstore for mini-versions of what you need and for small bottles to transfer products that aren't available in travel sizes.

One thing we don't bring along are our make-up brushes. Although we are big fans of using quality tools at home, we simply can't afford the space to bring them along. So only make-up that can be applied with fingers, q-tips, and the occasional facial tissue will do.

Here is our list of essentials:

Tinted moisturizer with sunscreen (we love that it is multi-purpose and allows us to skip foundation).
Concealer (nothing like the stress of travel to bring out dark circles and blemishes!).
Powder compact (not as messy to travel with as loose powder, but still covers shine in hot climates).
Waterproof mascara.
Moisturizing lipstick or lip gloss.

If you want to try something new on vacation this summer, consider geocaching. As described online, this sport requires a handheld GPS or a cell-phone app and a membership to geocaching.com (free for general use; premium membership, with custom searches and alerts, costs $10 for three months). A treasure hunt that's played globally, geocaching involves finding a "cache," usually a waterproof box, that another enthusiast has hidden. There are more than a million caches stashed all over the world, so the likelihood that you'll find one in your vacation location is rather high. Enter the coordinates to a local cache, lace on your hiking boots, and go on a treasure hunt. When you find it, take a prize from inside -- usually small trinkets like toys, buttons, or coins -- and leave something for the next geocacher to discover on their hunt.

Important Tips for Traveling with Minors

When I renewed my kids' passports over the weekend, I was a bit shocked to find that both parents (if still living and in a custodial relationship) are now required to be present when the renewal documents are submitted. This was definitely not the case 5 years ago. Why the change? I'm told that it is related to the increased awareness of abductions, most often by a parent who doesn't want the other parent to have custody.

But tighter restrictions for traveling with kids doesn't end there. Airlines and immigration officials frequently require notarized letters from the other parent if one parent is traveling alone with a child. If you have sole custody, you'll need documentation that proves it, including a birth certificate naming only one parent, a death certificate proving that the other parent is deceased, or other official certifications. Be sure to bring copies, in case the authorities need to keep one.

Incidentally, remember that children's passports must be renewed every 5 years. And note that you must keep your passport updated: many countries won't allow you in if you have less than 6 months remaining on your passport.

Traveler's Insurance

The Wall Street Journal published an article in today's paper with useful tips about traveler's insurance. When we first started traveling for business, traveler's insurance was often pooh-poohed as an unnecessary rip-off and in those days, when the airlines often flew half-full planes, a cancelled flight wasn't as much of a big deal: rebooking (for whatever reason - I once got on a different flight with a different airline at no extra cost to me just because I missed the plane - and I was flying an extremely discounted ticket) often wasn't a problem. But today itineraries are more complex, people are traveling at older and older ages, and more people are going to parts of the world that they never would have considered before, and so insurance can often make good sense. But as the article cautions - be sure to read the policy carefully so that you know that the most likely scenario that you want covered really is.

Here's to Healthy Travels - Summer 2011

Research studies prove that taking a vacation is good for your health. In fact, a nine-year study found that middle-aged men who skip their annual vacations are 17% more likely to die (and almost 35% more likely to die of heart disease) than men who do take vacations every year. And that boost of energy and improved mood you get from time away from the office will increase your work productivity when you get back -- so not only will you stay healthier, but your career may get a boost, too! Want more proof? Consider this:

Taking time off will decrease stress and tension and the maladies they lead to (like hypertension and migraines).
A change of pace now and then helps fight off symptoms of depression.
Less downtime can lead to less sleep; this in turn may lead to weight gain.
More time outside, in fresh air and sunlight (rather than in recirculated air under artificial lights), gives your body Vitamin D to protect bones and lower cancer risk.

But travel has its health-related downsides, too, and as the 2011 summer vacation season approaches, it is smart to think about the preventative measures you can take to keep you and your travel companions safe and healthy, no matter where you go. Here are some ideas:

In the Air

We all know about the germs that are recycled -- along with the air -- in a crowded airplane cabin. So keep your time on the plane as short as possible by booking flights early in the morning when you're least likely to be delayed. And travel on Monday (the day with the least crowded flights) rather than Thursday (the day with the biggest crowds).
Don't use the airline's blankets or pillows unless they come in a sealed bag. These items are not always washed between flights and can therefore be rife with the germs of the gent who drooled on the pillow an hour ago.
On long flights, get up and move around every hour or two to avoid cramped muscles and reduced circulation. And consider wearing compression socks or stockings.
Hydrate, hydrat, hydrate!

In the Car

If you are preparing for a long trip, have a tune-up -- check the oil, tire pressure, etc. -- before you leave, and make sure you have emergency equipment, including flares, in your trunk.
Take a break from driving if you feel tired or sleepy.
Always lock your doors while you are driving and keep windows rolled up far enough so that no one can reach in while you are stopped at a traffic light.
Never leave the car unlocked and never leave the keys in the ignition -- even if you are just stopping for a moment.

In the Hotel

Use antibacterial wipes to clean items in your hotel room that housekeepers generally ignore, but that can be rife with germs from former guests: the TV remote, telephone receiver, and clock radio.
Always order extra blankets when you reach your room to replace the bedspread. Why? While most hotels only wash bedspreads every couple of months, the blankets from the housekeeping closet are laundered before they are put away.

With Children

If your child needs to use a car seat or booster seat, make sure you know how to install it correctly and always use it. (The American Academy of Pediatrics has a thorough online guide to help you.
Bring along items to help child-proof your hotel room (or Grandma's house, if you're visiting relatives).
Young children have sensitive skin, so remember to slather them with sunscreen and put on a hat if you'll be outdoors.
Dress your child in bright, easy-to-recognize clothing and always carry a current photo in case you are separated.
Carry a first aid kit, that includes items such as antibiotic ointment, band aids, and Tylenol.

No matter where you are, always carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (like Purell) or cleansing wipes with you to use when soap and water aren't available. And be sure to pack a first aid kit, that includes wound wash, bandages and band aids, antibiotic ointment, waterproof first aid tape (to dress wounds, create splints, and even fix a hem), Tylenol, Benadryl (for congestion, allergies, bug bites, rashes, and - in a pinch - insomnia), antacids (to relieve heartburn and indigestion from eating foods outside your norm and, perhaps, overindulging), insect repellent, and high SPF sunscreen. You might consider adding an antibiotic like Cipro, too.

One of the biggest way that travel - even vacations - can wreak havoc on your health is by interrupting your usually healthy daily regimen. Once you are out of your usual routine, it can be easy to go whole hog at dinner and to skip your usual workouts. But even business travelers who are extremely pressed for time can squeeze in some exercise by following these tips:

Pack healthy snacks like dried fruit and nuts to eat on the plane and between meals.
Drink plenty of water - not only air travel can be dehydrating, but being off your usual schedule can affect your digestive system and staying well-hydrated will help keep you regular.
Get to the gym whenever you can. Most hotels now have some sort of workout space - make sure yours does (with extended hours if possible) when you make your reservation.
Walk whenever you can, whether it is part of your sightseeing or a means of transport from one appointment to the next. If you are near the shore, walking on a sandy beach has special benefits for your legs and feet.
The hotel's stairway can be a great place to work up a sweat! Race up as fast as you can (taking the steps 2 or 3 at a time) then use a recovery pace on the way down. Repeat or do as many floors as you can. You might alternate with sprints in which you take every step.
If all else fails, here are some basic exercises you can do in your hotel room (or really, anywhere):
- jump rope (bring one with you since it doesn't take up much room in a suitcase)
- push-ups (always considered the ultimate fitness test so do as many as you can)
- crunches and reverse crunches (lie on back, bring knees to chest)
- windshield wipers (lie on back, raise legs straight up, then lower to floor on one side and raise up to center and the over to the other side)
- forward and side lunges (do them down the hallways if you're brave and want the space)

One way to stretch your restaurant buying power is to sign up for one of the restaurant discount cards which seem to be proliferating. Click here for a summary of what each one costs, what it offers, and where to call for more information.
Another money-saving idea is to call the restaurant you are interested in trying before you visit to find out if there are any discounts, weekly specials, or deals like "kids eat free." We've stopped by Aza, the new Upper East Side tapas bar a couple times and are finding it a terrific addition to the neighborhood. The space is pretty, the staff is friendly, and the variety of tapas dishes is plentiful. The servings are modest (but inexpensive), so you'll want to order a couple of dishes per person if you want more than just a snack. Our favorites include the tortilla espanada, the shrimp, and the chicken satay. Their port-by-the-glass is wonderfully rich and full-bodied - don't miss it!

We also like the Zebu Grill for a taste of Brazilian food (and terrific caipirinhas). Even better though, is the Argentinian food served at Libertador Parrilla Argentina. Start off with a plate of empanadas and then don't miss the steak for two with the wonderfully garlicky provenzal fries. (If you don't want the steak, we found the chicken with mashed potatoes and the homemade ravioli a better choice than the seafood pasta.)

All this put us in the mood for some Spanish culture, so we headed over to Flamenco Hoy by Carlos Saura, presented by Flamenco Futuro and the World Music Institute at the NY City Center. What a terrific, vibrant performance!

If you are planning to line up to see the Tournament of Roses Parade or have been fortunate enough to snag tickets to it, remember that when viewing the festivities in person, positioning matters. There are two key tv spots - where the TV personalities are stationed and where the cameras are focused - and all the special parade action (fireworks, dance performances, band numbers, etc) happen there. There are even some floats that feature their best and most elaborate decorations only on the side facing the cameras. Philadelphia vs NYC

Over the weekend, Joe Queenan published a column in the Wall Street Journal about possible reasons Cliff Lee spurned the Yankees for the Phillies. Queenan cites historical facts (Philadelphia's prominent place in the nation's birth), sports stats, cultural status and more. We assume that when he chose to pit Philadelphia against New York City, it was all in good fun, and most of the comments in response to the article acknowledge that, while wondering, why would Queenan pick such a fight and pick and choose his arguments so indiscriminately (e.g. the Steuben Parade is hardly what NYC is known for, while the Mummers play a major role in Philadelphia's identity).

The Airport Pat-Down

We are hardly surprised about the hoopla that has erupted in response to the full-body scans at U.S. airports and the related pat-downs. Having our bags scanned and being forced to take off our shoes is one thing -- the kind of humiliation that many passengers have experienced at the hands of TSA workers is quite another. Despite the administration's insistence that the policy will remain in place for "our safety," we predict that one way or another, we'll see some changes -- attempts at better training, more rules detailing what is appropriate and what isn't, and so forth. One reason we are so sure that this won't simply pass into accepted practice is related to the degree of media attention this issue is receiving. Here is a sampling:

Top 10 Tips for Riding the NYC Subway

November and December are two of the busiest months for visitors to New York City. And given the mid-town grid-lock that all these extra people create, many tourists wisely opt for public transportation instead of attempting to navigate NYC traffic on their own. Crime is at record low levels in NYC, but that doesn't mean that it has been completely eradicated. To avoid being a victim, follow these tips from the NYPD Transit Bureau:

1. STAY ALERT….BE AWARE - sounds simplistic, so why are thefts of electronic devices the major crime in our city? Because many people are preoccupied while talking on their cell phone, absorbed in
playing a game or listening to music when walking down the street or on the subway or bus.

2. SUBWAY RIDERS - GO INTO SUBWAY ENTRANCES WHERE THE BULBS ARE
LIT IN GREEN-THESE ARE FULL SERVICE STATIONS. Red bulbs indicate limited service and may not have an attendant.

3. BUDDY UP – Don't travel alone

4. It is usually safer to ride the trains in the car where the conductor is located, or in the front of the train. Experience has shown that when fights break out, they usually occur in the last two cars of the train.

5. If you're going to rendezvous with friends---meet at a pizza place, the park, or someone's home instead of the subway platform.

6. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS AND AVOID POSSIBLE ALTERCATIONS. If you see a group of kids on the subway platform, or the street, walk another way. Go into a store or doorman building if you feel
threatened until the danger passes. If your electronic device is taken from you, don't fight, it's not worth getting hurt over.

7. KEEP AWAY FROM SUBWAY DOORS WHEN LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC- why make it easy for someone on the platform to reach in and grab your player?

8. DO NOT WALK OR RIDE BETWEEN TRAIN CARS.

9. DON'T TEMPT A THIEF WITH YOUR ELECTRONIC GAME OR DEVICE- Put it away when you're on the subway and disguise your player by changing your earpiece color.

10. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING….CALL 911.

New York City-Area Hikes

November is a great time to hike in and around New York City. The summer heat is long gone; the winter winds have yet to make their appearance. Here are five hikes that are especially interesting:

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: The wide, level 1.8-mile loop around scenic West Pond in the rustic Jamaica Bay bird sanctuary is a great introduction to hiking. For more info: nps.gov/gate, (718) 318-4340.

Native Forest, New York Botanical Garden: Fifty acres of Yosemite-size timber, the largest tract of virgin forest left in New York City, lies at the heart of this Bronx oasis better known for orchids and roses. Easy trails meander amid centuries-old trees beside the restored Bronx River. For more info, nybg.org, 718-817-8700.

Old Croton Aqueduct Trail: A wide, easy path traces the linear route of New York City’s historic water pipeline. The most interesting 5.5 miles run from Ossining (train-accessible site of historic bridges, weirs and a visitor center) north to Croton Gorge Park (crowned with a 300-foot dam at the Croton Reservoir). Shore Trail, Palisades Interstate Park: This waterfront path on the Jersey side of the Hudson River sits in the shadow of the sheer Palisades cliffs just north of the George Washington Bridge. David Weld Sanctuary: Easy trails through The Nature Conservancy’s compact 125-acre preserve near Nissequogue, Long Island (north of Smithtown), run past swamps, fields, shoreline bluffs and examples of the region’s glacier-scarred geologic past. For more info, (631) 367-3225.

How to Talk Your Way into Getting Great Travel Deals

We've written before about how complaining with class can payoff with big dividends - including free upgrades, complimentary meals, and more (for example, see our September 16th post). But you can receive many of these same benefits without having to endure discomfort or travel hassles -- sometimes all you need to do is ask if the airline, hotel, or car rental clerk can improve your experience. We've found -- and others have to -- see the related article from Redbook -- that if you just ask nicely, you might be rewarded with a better hotel room. And always mention birthday, anniversary, or promotion celebrations -- you just might be feted with a free glass of champagne!

Amtrak Acela - NYC to Boston

I used to ride Amtrak trains between New York and Boston often, but in recent years I have been driving and flying much more frequently.

My ride today reminds me of why I like trains. To begin with, Penn Station is an easier cab ride from my Manhattan apartment than Newark or Kennedy and is probably a push with LaGuardia. But the fact that you can just as easily buy your tickets online and check in via kiosk, but that there is no security screening means that there is no need to pad your arrival time by an hour or so as I do when I fly.

The seats in business class are roomy and comfortable - and since we're not packed in like sardines, I can really spread out. There are electrical outlets and wifi for those who want to use their laptops. There is a quiet car where "library silence" rules and a cafe cat for those who need a snack.

Best of all, though, is the view. If you sit in a window seat on the right side (facing the front of the train), you will have water views for much of the trip. I enjoyed seeing the ferries to Block Island, the migratory birds perched on old pilings, and the classic New England cottages on the shore. Every now and then we'd come to a beach and I'd see the waves gently lapping fhe sand. If it hadn't been such a misty morning there likely would have been a nice sunrise, too.

All in all it has been a very pleasant way to travel.

A Complaint Rewarded

We recently stayed in a hotel near my parents' condo - a convenient way to spend quality time with them without the exhaustion that would otherwise accompany attempts by two 80-somethings to host an energetic family of four. The hotel is part of a mid-level chain that often hosts small conferences - and on this occasion, what seemed to be a lovely wedding - boosted by its connection to an indoor water park.

We find it pricey for its location and amenities, but are willing to put up with small rooms, incredibly slow elevators, and a lack of services for the easy proximity to my folks. This recent visit, however, put us over the edge. All night long the air conditioner burst on and off in sputters loud enough to wake us all often throughout the night. The wedding party was a bit more exuberant than we would have liked. And to top it off, just as dawn broke, the fire alarm went off multiple times.

I mentioned our disappointment when I checked out. I didn't really expect much - we could have made the room warmer or colder to avoid the on-and-off air conditioning sound, and certainly the hotel can't be blamed when guests mis-behave (by then, I knew that the fire alarm had been a prank, and the culprit had been caught). And although the front desk clerk apologized profusely, no refund or reduction in price was offered. But while I was waiting with my kids and the luggage for my husband to swing around with the car, the shift manager dropped by with coupons for a free visit for the four of us to the (incredibly expensive) water park. It was a wonderful gesture (albeit one that we may never use, since they expire before our next planned visit) - and left us with a warm feeling about what otherwise would have been a very unsatisfactory hotel stay.

Insider Tips for Catching a Cab

A corollary to Murphy's Law (that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong) is that when you most need a taxi-cab (e.g. when it is bitterly cold, pouring rain, or you're in a terrible hurry), there are none to be found. Here are a few tips for increasing the odds that you'll catch a cab when you need it most:

Head to a hotel. Since hotel guests are a big user of taxis, many cabbies are in the habit of swinging by to pick up a fare. If a doorman hails a cab for you, tip him just as you would if you were staying at the hotel. (And even if you have to wait a bit, why not do it under the hotel's marquee?)
Consider a corner. By standing at the intersection of two streets, you are twice as likely to successfully hail a cab.
Think centrally. Empty cabs tend to head toward the center of town on the major roads, so you should, too. For example, if you are at the Javits Center in New York City, head east toward Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Insider Tips for Packing for a Beach Vacation

Whether your travels are taking you to the pink sand of Bermuda or the gorgeous beaches in Hawaii (or even your local beach or pool), you'll want to be prepared with all the essentials you'll need:

A fluffy towel or beach mat (check with your hotel to see if they will lend you towels for the beach before you pack).
Sunblock - bring more than you think you'll need so you can reapply often.
Sunglasses - protecting your eyes from the sun's rays is a must!
Lip balm - look for one with SPF.
Flip flops or other comfortable sandals - you need to protect your feet from hot sand.
Refillable water bottle - you need to stay well hydrated.
Empty plastic bag - indispensable for wet towels or bathing suits, for keeping the trash off the beach and/or for packing your shell or driftwood collection.
Baby powder - use it to help wipe the sand off -- this really works!
A sturdy tote to carry all your essentials with you. We recommend using the same tote you use as a carry-on on the plane, making sure that it is washable (since it may get covered with sand or salt water) and that it has comfortable straps that don't dig into your shoulder.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive here at The Insider Travel Guides, is "what should I pack and what should I leave behind?" When it comes to beauty and toiletry items, there are some obvious must-haves. Here they are:

Toothbrush and toothpaste
Shaving essentials
Comb, brush, styling products
Moisturizer (air travel is always drying to your skin)
Lip balm (your lips get dry, too). Note: we like to travel with multi-purpose products and so pack Vaseline, which we can use as a lip balm, moisturizer - especially for the dry skin in elbows and heels, and make-up remover.

Emergency first-aid kit with band-aids, antibiotic cream, Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, antihistamines
A bottle of baby aspirin - its clot-busting effect can save your (or someone else's) life in the event of a heart attack. Just chew on one of the 81 mg tablets until emergency medical assistance arrives. (Note: this is a good thing to make sure is in your carry-on bag.)

So what should you leave behind? Here are our top choices:

We've written several times before about the value of photos as mementos from your travels and we've offered an assortment of insider tips and tricks to help you take the best photos possible. Our interest in vacation photography led us to read the recent New York Times article about self portraiture. Although the focus of that piece was to provide tips for photos meant to be added to social web sites (and the like), several of the ideas are general enough to be helpful when you are taking photos on a trip, too.

There will be fireworks displays all over the U.S. on Sunday as the nation celebrates Independence Day, but we think one of the best 4th of July festivities will be right here in New York, where major Revolutionary War battles like those in Brooklyn Heights and Fort Washington once took place. Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks is the place to be for the year's best show of spectacular explosions. The 2010 edition of this annual extravaganza will feature more than 40,000 bursts of pyrotechnic color and a special musical score with the theme "American Harmony." The show will get underway on July 4th at 9 pm and is visible for free from almost any unobstructed view of the Hudson River in Manhattan or New Jersey, but if you're lucky, you'll snag a seat at the Intrepid where the viewing is all but guaranteed to be terrrific.
